Location: North and South Tower entrances to the Lab Sciences Commons
Art
and science converge at the Lab Science Commons, enhancing the North
and South Tower entrances with stunning sculptures created through a
collaboration between Tennessee Tech's chemistry and biology faculty and
lead artist Roger Berry. The South Tower features a three-dimensional
Periodic Table of Elements, where each element showcases precise
electron configurations, and the nucleus is crafted from shimmering
dichroic glass. In the North Tower, the sculpture transitions from
grapevine roots to a twisting vine and then transforms into a DNA double
helix with a bound Leucine Zipper protein, with nucleotide bases
accurately depicted in their chemical bonding patterns, also made of
dichroic glass. The grapevine sculpture, 10 feet in diameter and soaring
over 26 feet high, casts mesmerizing shadows throughout the atrium.
Together, these installations enhance the Lab Sciences Commons while
inspiring curiosity and engagement among students and visitors.
