Less than a 100-yard walk from the Student Center is USAO's main residential space for freshmen, Sparks Hall. This three-story, double suite-style traditional dorm houses around 200 students each year and encourages students to get to know each other through numerous community spaces. Rooms are fully furnished with extra-long twin beds, desks, dressers and plenty of storage space. Every suite has its own bathroom and shower facilities. There is also a 24-hour computer lab, free laundry facilities, movie room and community kitchen.
Another prominent historical building on campus, Sparks Hall was built in 1914 by acclaimed early Oklahoma architect Solomon Andrew Layton, who designed the Oklahoma Capitol. The building was named after Nellie Sparks, a young Chickasaw woman who died at age 19 while away at college in Missouri. Her grieving parents donated 20 acres of their tribal land allotment to the new women’s college so Oklahoma girls could gain a liberal arts education closer to home. The building has always served exclusively as a residence hall for students.
