Angelina LaPointe is an Allan Hancock College alumni who studied Printmaking and Book Arts at UCSB’s College of Creative Studies. In 2014, she founded SideCar Press, a one-women letterpress shop printing a range of projects from party invitations to art installations.
Her block print technique is based on the century’s old Japanese key block method, also looking to early 20th century Art Nouveau design and the groundbreaking prints of the Russian Avant-Garde movement. She combines influences ranging from “full-color old-school” tattooing to xeroxed punk posters, to the 1970s science books that inspired and informed her childhood.
Shallows in Flight is a series of 30 linoleum block prints, hand colored with Copic markers and mounted on laser cut wood. It features Barn Swallows, Hirundo rustica, known for their spectacular trailing tail feathers. The Piece explores modularity. The collection of small works acts together as a larger installation just as birds move together as a flock.
