Artist Statement: Central Coast artist Scott Semple creates ceramic vessels on a scale so large that they seem imbued with a sense of both grandiosity and importance. Using a specialized technique that involves constructing the vessel in sections, Semple seamlessly combined the pieces into one large ceramic artwork before firing in an electric kiln. During the college’s centennial year, Semple demonstrated his technique to Hancock students who then assisted in the creation of the finished product.

Artist Statement: The vessel’s painted imagery pays homage to the history of Allan Hancock. The college’s colors are represented in the blue paint and gold leaf; the wind-blown wheat mimics the college’s logo; the college’s aeronautical beginnings, mascot, PCPA, and viticulture are included; the compass placed atop symbolizes the direction each student can take after attending Allan Hancock College.
