Named after former college president Dr. Karl Jacobs, the Jacobs Center for Science and Math (JCSM) provides an engaging environment for students enrolled in our mathematics, life sciences, and physical sciences classes. The 106,000-square-foot building is one of several green facilities on campus and has earned LEED Gold certification for its use of sustainable and energy-efficient technologies.
The ground floor features spacious study areas, with comfortable seating, from the main lobby to various pockets within the hallways.
A pendulum and fractal trees are among the unique items found in the JCSM building lobby area. The pendulum serves as an educational tool using mathematics to demonstrate the Earth's rotation. The fractal trees were created by Dr. Robert Fathauer and used as the basis for a series of five murals in the lobby. Fathauer's fractal constructs are created through graphical iteration, resulting in objects that exhibit self-similarity across various scales. These intricate designs are mathematically interconnected, reflecting the fundamental principles of fractals.
On the ground floor, you’ll also find the Math Lab, where you can rent a graphing calculator and utilize drop-in tutoring help provided by our math faculty. The lab is equipped with several computers where you can do your math homework, complete math classes via EAGLE, and access online resources, including math tips and how-to videos for problem-solving. Math textbooks are also available in the lab.
The second and third floors are home to classrooms and several cutting-edge labs including biology, chemistry, and physics. The greenhouse is also located in the JCSM.
